Greening up is one of the most useful techniques in Betfair trading. If a market has moved in your favor since you placed your first bet, greening up lets you lock in the same profit (or the same loss) no matter which outcome wins. You do this by placing an opposite bet – a LAY after a BACK, or a BACK after a LAY – sized so that your profit or loss comes out equal across all outcomes.

The hard part is doing the math and placing that opposite bet fast enough before the market moves again. BetOnDroid automates this in two ways: Manual Green Up and Automatic Green Up.

Manual Green Up

Once one of your bets matches, BetOnDroid shows the green-up profit or loss in the middle column of the price ladder, on every price row with the greem color. That number is exactly what you would lock in if your opposite bet matched at that price.

Tap the cell showing that number, and BetOnDroid places the opposite bet for you at that price. In order to lcok in your +2.0 EUR profit just tap on middle column with price 10.5 on a screenshot below

One thing to keep in mind: placing the order isn’t the end of it. The opposite bet still needs to match for the green-up to actually lock in. Until it matches, you’re not green yet – you’re just looking at what your position would be if it does.

Settings that affect Manual Green Up

Two settings shape how your green-up bet behaves:

Automatic Green Up

Automatic Green Up activates with one tap, using the G icon in the market window’s toolbar. Once it’s on, BetOnDroid places the opposite green-up bet for you automatically, the moment your first bet matches – no need to tap anything by yourself!

After you activate Automatic Green Up, BetOnDroid greens up every bet you place from that point on once it matches (or even partially matches).

Important: BetOnDroid won’t green up bets placed before you activated Automatic Green Up. The mode only applies going forward.

Automatic Green Up in the background

If you’ve enabled the background mode setting, you don’t need to keep BetOnDroid open for Automatic Green Up to work – it can trigger even while the app is in the background.

That said, this isn’t guaranteed. For reasons outside our control, Android operating system can unload BetOnDroid from memory under low-memory conditions or for other system reasons. If that happens while your app is in the background, Automatic Green Up won’t trigger for that bet.

Manual or Automatic?

Manual Green Up gives you control over exactly when and at what price you green up – useful if you want to judge the moment yourself. Automatic Green Up removes that decision entirely, locking in your green-up the instant a bet matches, which matters most when prices move fast and you can’t react in time.

Many traders use both: Automatic Green Up as a safety net during volatile in-play moments, and Manual Green Up when they want to choose their own price.
